Become a Mentor

Are you interested in mentoring Namahana high school student interns?

Namahana School’s Learning Through Interests (LTI) program is a pillar of our education model— supporting the premise that there are enriching learning opportunities outside the classroom.

Based on experiences shared by Big Picture Learning, internships are particularly effective for students who have had limited success in traditional schools. Internships provide a much-needed counterbalance to the prevailing cognitive-abstract curriculum and pedagogy that disadvantages young people who learn best by using their minds and hands in real-world settings. Additionally, ʻāina-based learning is grounded in students’ community and place, and thus adds authenticity and real-world connections to their learning experience.

Mentors offer an incredible opportunity for students to learn from experts who are passionate about their fields of interest. You can find out more about the Learning Through Interests program at Namahana here: Information on the benefits of student internships and a list of our current community partners.

The LTI program will be available to students starting in 10th and 11th grades, depending on his/her/their personal learning plan. Given Namahana School’s opening timeline, we anticipate the program to start in Fall 2026. We’ll continue to develop and update this page with information for mentors, parents and students. In the meantime, please see the video below to get a glimpse of LTI-in-action at a Big Picture Learning school.

As we continue to develop our LTI program, Namahana School is looking to connect with businesses, organizations and professionals to serve as internship sites and mentors for our high school students. Even if your business is not based on Kauaʻi, we welcome those able to offer virtual or partial-remote internship opportunities.
