Daniel Leland Namahana School Teacher

Daniel Leland has experience teaching U.S., World, and Ancient History in diverse school settings across Minnesota for 11 years. He has taught both mainstream and accelerated courses with a focus on experiential learning and student-centered inquiry, most recently serving as an Honors Humanities and Social Studies teacher for 6th grade in Minnetonka, Minnesota. His instructional approach integrates academic literacy, Socratic Seminar, and project-based learning, while supporting his students as they develop historical empathy and critical thinking skills. Daniel has also been involved in Knowledge Bowl team coaching and student club activities.

Based on the belief that history becomes meaningful when students see themselves reflected in it, Daniel designs learning experiences that connect academic content to students’ lived realities. His philosophy is informed by a commitment to place-based learning, critical thinking, and democratic engagement, with the goal of helping students become informed, empowered community members and global citizens. As a founding teacher at Namahana, Daniel looks forward to contributing to a collaborative, ʻāina-based educational community where student-led inquiry and community partnerships direct the learning path and process.

Originally from rural Minnesota, Daniel has long explored by canoe the lakes and rivers of the Northland, including in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.  He also has significant experience backpacking in the Rocky Mountains while living in Colorado and when visiting National Parks. He enjoys camping, gardening, and traveling to new places.  While at home he can be found reading or playing folk songs on his guitar, and he is always looking for new partners for Dungeons and Dragons campaigning.
