MAHALO TO THE NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY

The community came together in full force to support Namahana School’s recovery efforts following Hurricane Lowell. From tree clean-up, to generator and supply donations, to messages sharing meaningful resources and kind words—it was humbling. Just a year ago we opened our doors. Post-Lowell, it was evident how deeply woven Namahana has already become in the community.

Outside of fallen trees, both our temporary and permanent campus sites sustained little to no damage. School leadership immediately compiled a post-hurricane survey and shared it with Namahana families via email and phone tree to understand needs and priorities. The range of feedback was vast: some families lost their homes, while others had no utility interruptions at all. With this data, school re-opened on Thursday, September 17th.

Despite the disruption, this experience served as a live case study on the resilience of our school community and construction team in action. It also underscored our excitement for our permanent campus in the heart of Kīlauea town—it was palpably evident what a difference it will make to be a central, walking-distance resource for our kids and community.
