Bachelor of Education, The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

Born and raised on Kauaʻi, Erika Sakamoto brings nearly three decades of rich classroom experience and a deep commitment to student growth to Namahana. A proud graduate of Kauaʻi High School, she has dedicated her career to culture-based education, literacy, and supporting students across multiple grade levels on the island.

A significant portion of Erika’s career was spent with Kamehameha Schools, where she wore several key hats. As a Literacy Instruction and Support Specialist based in Kapaʻa, she spent over a decade creating engaging, culture-based content and workshops that bridged the gap between home and school. Most recently, she served as Lead Kumu for Kamehameha Schools Preschools in Kauamakani, leading collaborative teaching teams and building strong partnerships with 'ohana.

With a versatile background that includes teaching English Language Arts at Chiefess Kamakaheli Middle School and Social Studies at Kauaʻi High School, Kumu Erika is uniquely equipped to guide middle schoolers. She loves helping adolescents navigate the unique social, emotional, and academic changes of these transitional years. Her classroom approach combines structured, standards-aligned instruction with a supportive environment that encourages critical thinking and curiosity.

Erika loves exploring the island’s natural beauty from mauka to makai, practicing the traditional art of making lei hulu, enjoying staycations, and being at home with her family and three dogs.
