Bachelor of Science, Marine Biology, University of Hawa’i at Mānoa
Bachelor of Science, Secondary Education (Science), University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, expected 05/2026
Makaela Weathers grew up on the windward side of Oʻahu, between Kailua and Kāneʻohe, where her deep love for the ocean began at a young age. That passion led her to pursue a degree in Marine Biology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, with a specialization in shark ecology. She spent two years conducting shark research at the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology.
After completing her studies, Makaela transitioned into eco-tourism, working as a shark safety diver for three years. Her daily time in the ocean and the opportunity to share those experiences with others sparked a passion for teaching — particularly in helping people connect with ʻāina. This calling led her to Kupu, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through conservation and education. As an Environmental Education Specialist, she supported ʻāina-based curriculum development in schools across Oʻahu, promoting hands-on, place-based learning.
Motivated by this work, Makaela chose to return to school to earn her teaching license. She is now honored to be a part of Namahana, where she continues to support students in cultivating strong connections to place, science, and community.
Outside the classroom, Makaela enjoys spending time in the ocean — especially freediving and shelling — and deepening her knowledge of Hawaiʻi’s native plants through hiking and propagation. She also cherishes time with her twin sister, who is also a teacher on Kauaʻi, and with the rest of her family.
